Love tattoos are most regularly used to depict the deep feelings that the wearer has for a particular individual. This person might be a significant other, a family member or a child. Love tattoos may also signify a certain fascination a person has with the strong, often sensual emotion of love and all that goes with it.
When love tattoos are meant to show the emotions a person has towards someone specific, they may use a portrait-type image of them, usually with names and dates printed onto a banner, or circling the face. There may also be a wreath of roses (the modern symbol of romantic love), aster (a symbol of sweet, delicate love), and bluebell (the emblem for everlasting love). Other symbols used for this design may be fire, to signify passion; broad, bold circles to show the unending nature of the relationship; and, of course, hearts.
Some love tattoos take a less specific direction. These are normally single symbols like hearts, lips or even kanji script. Sometimes these images are melded together; for instance, two swans holding their beaks together, creating a heart shape. One interesting idea would be to place small flowers or opals (a symbol of both love and hope), within the open areas of a Celtic love knot.
Love tattoos are not all simple symbols and portraits. You can create an interesting design by taking the profile of both the wearer, and the beloved individual and melding them together. This design could easily take the symbol route, and morph into the shape of a heart, or have a large, blooming rose in the center. This style could also feature names and dates, as well as quotes, stories or poems of important significance. Another idea would be for the couple to be joined in an embrace and surrounded, and held together by rings, or red, purple or white ribbon.
Although love tattoos are generally used by a person who is actually in love, it is quite common for a person to be consumed by the idea of such a powerful and mysterious emotion, and want to express it with something as bold and lasting as love is supposed to be.

Heart Tattoo Meanings
Besides love, the heart as a symbol has other meanings as well:
- The soul: people used to believe that the heart is the location of the human soul.
- In many religions, the heart has a mystical importance. Christians believe it is the seat of emotions (more particularly love) and Islam sees the heart as the spiritual centre.
- In Ancient Egypt myths, the heart was weighed against the feather of Ma'at (the ancient Egyptian goddess of truth).
Love Tattoos
Heart tattoos, just like star tattoos, have always been popular, and we usually associate them with the old school Sailor Jerry flash type of tattooing. The heart symbol can have a lot of meanings, the most obvious one being Love...
Here’s the typical scenario:
Still others decide that it’s part of their history, they’ll just have to live with. In any case, love heart tattoos have been the cause of embarrassment and regret ;-)
The combination of heart tattoos and names started in the beginning of the 20th century when sailors wore red heart tattoos with the word Mom in the center. Later, during World War II, soldiers wore heart tattoos with the name of their girlfriend or wife. In both cases they acted as a kind of lucky charm.
Here’s the typical scenario:
A couple, wanting to express undying love for one another, get matching heart tattoos with each other’s names written across the heart image, perhaps on a sort of banner. Flames or roses may be used to further embellish the heart tattoo image.
A few years later, when the couple go their separate ways, each is left with an indelible reminder – and a dilemma regarding what to do with it. Some people opt to get their heart tattoo designs filled in, to obscure the name – others opt for tattoo removal.

Love Tattoo Designs & Symbols
Love is the ultimate emotion experienced by human beings. It is our life long quest for love which keeps us going, and it is for this exact reason that people often decide on a love related tattoo design.
Anyone looking for such a design will not be disappointed. There are plenty of options available out there - both traditional and exotic. Here is a list of some of the common (and not so common) symbols and ideas that people like to use for the topic of love:
- Doves
- Cupid Angels
- Cherubs
- Cherry Blossoms
- Lock & Key
- Lips
- Heart
- Roses
- Swans
Obviously, some of these options will seem a bit "off the mark" for a few people - whilst for others, having a heart tattooed on to them would seem like an incredibly mainstream thing to do.
Regardless of the way in which you feel, love remains to be the number one reason that people get tattoos, and this is set to continue in to the future as long as love exists as a human emotion.
